One of the best precautions to take to help protect your skin during summer outdoor activities is the use of sunscreen. Not only should you use sunscreen whenever you’re outdoors, it is also important to choose the right sunscreen, and to apply it properly.
Many people are confused about what the SPF numbers mean. Did you know that SPF 15 absorbs 93% of the sun’s harmful UVB rays, while SPF 30 increases that protection to 97% protection.
One of the most common errors in using sunscreen is not using enough of the product to give adequate protection. Experts recommend the use of a full ounce (enough to fill a shot glass) in order to give proper coverage, and sunscreen should be re-applied every two hours. Many people also wait too long to reapply. Also, don’t forget to use SPF protection for your lips as well!

Here are some additional sun protection tips from the American Academy of Dermatology:
  • Avoid outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun's rays are the strongest.
  • Seek shade whenever possible.
  • Wear protective clothing and accessories, such as wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses.
  • Follow the "Shadow Rule." If your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun's damaging rays are at their strongest and you are likely to sunburn.
  • Avoid tanning beds.
